Inspired by the foundational principles of democracy as born in ancient Athens, a Citizens' Assembly is a mechanism of informed democratic deliberation in which ordinary citizens engage directly in community problem-solving and public decision-making.


Backed by decades of academic research and proven effective in addressing contentious issues the world over, citizens' assemblies are a democratic tool waiting for their revolutionary moment in America. 


Citizen’s Assemblies are already flourishing worldwide, becoming a means to address humanity's toughest problems and fight corruption in policy and politics. From Ireland to Paris, Canada and Belgium Citizens’ Assemblies are being used to elucidate challenging issues and form public agreement.


We stand at a crucial precipice, a defining moment. Will America fade, or will she once again step forward as a guiding light in the centuries long revolution of democracy against tyranny?

Abraham Lincoln, in his Gettysburg Address, envisioned a nation 'of the people, by the people, for the people’—a beacon of freedom that 'shall not perish from the earth.' Yet, as we look around today, it's hard not to feel a pang of doubt. We find ourselves in a sea of overwhelming challenges, both broad and deep, with new problems arising faster than solutions can keep pace. 


The machinery of American politics, once so admired, now struggles to achieve any public consensus. Every step ahead is weighed down by conflict, confusion, and controversy. The collective will—the very essence of a government 'of the people, by the people, for the people'—seems obscured, with little confidence or agreement we have made the right decisions. 


A Fading American Dream

: FROM DISCORD TO DISTRUST ◢

America, a nation longing for unity, finds herself divided by conflicting narratives. Our shared dreams and values are overshadowed by discord and growing discontent. Differences, instead of being celebrated, are misused to divide. The common voice struggles against the roar of financial influence. Our environment and infrastructure show signs of neglect and misuse. Trust is eroded by unaccountability, misinformation and lies. Facing existential crises, our gridlocked government seems incapable of making the wise decisions we need. Our stale political systems offer no space for creativity, imagination, or holistic problem-solving. Support for the vulnerable frays as our safety nets unravel. We lack a national referendum process for the public to reclaim its power. Corruption corrodes our politics, tarnishing every part of our national character. It feels as though we have no way out.

: FEELS FAR FROM OUR CONTROL ◢

A tense anxiety holds us, as the collapse of this American dream looms large around us. What are we to do? Every morning, the average American wakes up to a world filled with individual trials, burdened by worries with little resolution. We look in the mirror and wonder if our jobs will still be there next year, next month, or even next week, as the specter of automation and economic uncertainty lurks just around the corner. As we prepare our children for school, we question if the education our kids are receiving is adequately preparing them for a future that seems increasingly uncertain. We glance at the stack of medical bills on the table, a nagging reminder of the high cost of staying healthy in a system that feels far from our control.

We have become blind and voiceless.

Despite all, the American spirit endures. Founded on the belief that we can rise to challenges and shape our destiny, our Nation possesses the capacity to rebuild its struggling systems. The solutions lie in our ability to engage in open dialogue, understanding, and action. Fortunately, Citizens’ Assemblies are just the transformative tool of engagement we need.

Citizens’ Assemblies use a democratic lottery process to ensure fair demographic representation to convene individuals from the public, everyday citizens, to examine an issue in depth. The Assembly consults available resources, interviews experts and stakeholders, and gathers public feedback, all in order to delve into the subject matter and deliberate about it effectively. Through this comprehensive, facilitated, and dialogue driven process—the Assembly identifies workable solutions, arriving at a rough consensus on the recommendations to present to the Nation.

The participants in Assemblies are not politicians. They don't chase reelection, they don't pander to special interests or play into perverse incentives, nor do they obsess over public perception. There is no need, Assemblies constitute a finite civic duty, not a profession. They're just regular people, average citizens. But they have a stake in the game—they have to live with the outcomes of their decisions. This is their incentive for making sound choices, for creating a system that truly works.

We are calling for an all-hands-on-deck Apollo mission to course correct our Democracy and return it to the people. We hereby invite the best of the best, across industry and ideology, to come together and make this vision a reality. On mainstreet, the people are ready. 'Citizens' Assembly' is our watchword. The hour has come to unite and return to the great American experiment, evolving our democracy and giving voice to the people. It is time to establish a new American institution—a national Citizens’ Assembly for the people: the United States Civic Assembly.

Our mission now is to lay the groundwork for a permanent National Citizens' Assembly in the United States of America. We aspire to establish a fully-realized public institution by July 4th, 2026, commemorating our nation's 250th anniversary. To turn this aspiration into reality, we must embark on the journey of national healing today. The initial step entails conducting a series of ad hoc local and national Citizens' Assemblies over the upcoming months. These Assemblies will concentrate on our most pressing issues and refine the Assembly process. While we cannot save the world overnight, we can certainly jump-start the process.
